Fall Season (September – November)
As highlighted on Carol's Green Thumb card, Fall is the premier window to establish roots, aerate compacted clay, and install breathtaking cool-weather floral color.
Core Aeration & Fescue Over-seeding
September through November is the golden period for Fescue lawns. Aerating opens channels in hard clay so grass seed makes direct soil contact and roots deeply before winter.
Fall Floral Displays & Mums
Plant hardy Chrysanthemums, Pansies, Violas, and ornamental Cabbages that withstand chilly mornings and stay colorful through winter.
Pine Straw & Mulch Refresh
A 2 to 3-inch layer of fresh pine straw or mulch acts as an thermal blanket, insulating delicate perennial root zones against sudden frost snaps.
Pre-Emergent Winter Weed Barrier
Apply pre-emergent herbicide in early autumn to prevent Poa Annua (annual bluegrass), henbit, and chickweed from taking over.
Spring Season (March – May)
When soil temperatures consistently hit 55°F, turf and garden beds awaken. Proper spring preparation sets the trajectory for the entire summer.
Warm-Season Turf Green-up (Bermuda & Zoysia)
Scalp winter dormancy remnants, remove thatch, and allow the spring sun to warm the roots for rapid emerald green-up.
Spring Pre-Emergent for Crabgrass
Timing is everything: applying pre-emergent before crabgrass germinates creates a chemical barrier that stops weeds before they sprout.
Vibrant Summer Annuals & Perennials
Install Petunias, Lantana, Begonias, Caladiums, and Salvia into well-amended soil beds for show-stopping spring color.
Shrub Pruning & Shorter Edges
Trim back winter dieback, shape boxwoods and ornamental shrubs, and cut deep bed trenches to lock in fresh mulch.
Summer Season (June – August)
Georgia summers bring scorching heat and humidity. Lawn maintenance shifts to heat defense, disease prevention, and proper blade height.
Raise Mower Blade Heights
Taller grass blades shade the soil, reducing water evaporation and naturally suffocating heat-loving weeds.
Deep, Early-Morning Watering
Water deeply 2-3 times per week between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM rather than daily shallow sprinkles to encourage deep root systems.
Fungus & Pest Monitoring
Watch for brown patch or dollar spot in damp warm nights and armyworms in Bermuda turf. Carol's team provides targeted remedies.
Winter Season (December – February)
While grass slows down, winter is the ideal time for structural landscape enhancements, tree shaping, and gutter cleaning.
Dormant Tree & Shrub Pruning
With foliage gone, tree branching structures are clearly visible. Winter pruning prevents disease transmission and shapes majestic crowns.
Gutter & Yard Debris Clearing
Keep gutters free of sodden winter leaves to prevent roof overflows, foundation rot, and basement moisture leaks.
Drainage & Hardscape Upgrades
Winter is the perfect low-traffic time to build retaining walls, install French drains, and grade problematic slopes.
